What is Amaranth?

Amaranth is an event held by Manifest, traditionally on the Thursday prior to the usual three days of the Melbourne Anime Festival. In 2011 Amaranth will be held on the Friday night of Manifest allowing attendees to not have to worry about school or work the next day. Amaranth is traditionally, in a way, the Manifest formal; although you are not required to be a part of Manifest to be part of Amaranth, nor are you required to be a part of Amaranth to be part of Manifest. It is a unique dinner-dance event, including (though not strictly limited to) Japanese music, Japanese-style Cosplay, games and sub-events.

When is Amaranth?

As mentioned earlier, Amaranth will be held on the Friday of the Melbourne Anime Festival. This year (2011), Amaranth will be held on Friday, August 26th. The event will commence at 6.00pm for VIP guests, and at 7.30pm for all regular guests. Minors must leave the venue by 9.30pm so we suggest that minors purchase VIP tickets so they can spend more time at the event. The event for over-age guests will conclude at 11.30pm giving sufficient time for those who need to travel by public transport to get home. You are welcome to “hang around” after the event has concluded, however you will not be allowed in the venue (I.e. you may walk around the area with other attendees).

Where is Amaranth held? How do I get there?

Amaranth 2011 will be held at the Colonial Hotel in the Melbourne CBD, on the corner of Lonsdale and King Streets. There are a number of ways to get to the Colonial Hotel by public transport. You can get off at Spencer Street Station, take the Bourke Street Exit, walk down Bourke Street for one block, cross King Street, turn left, and walk towards Lonsdale Street.

You can also get off at Flagstaff Station and catch a tram (55 towards Domain Interchange) one stop down William Street to the corner of William and Lonsdale Streets. Then facing the direction you were travelling, turn right onto Lonsdale Street and walk one block to the corner of King and Lonsdale Streets.

If you are driving, we suggest parking at Wilson Parking on the corner of Lt Bourke St and Crombie Lane. Enter through Lt Bourke Street. Parking here is charged at a flat rate of $6.00 on Friday nights if you enter after 5.00pm and exit before midnight. Make sure you're leaving before midnight though, as the after-hours let-out fee is $120.

What is at Amaranth?

Amaranth usually includes dinner and a dance floor accompanied by a DJ and live entertainment. In the past Amaranth has also held King and Queen Competitions, Dance competitions, Spot Dances, Silent Auctions, Raffles and Trivia. At this point in time the events for 2011 are yet to be confirmed.

What food is there at Amaranth?

At Amaranth 2011 all attendees can expect to be fed dinner, cocktail style. VIP guests will be treated to an exclusive sit-down dinner but will also still be able to try out all the cocktail foods when they join the main event. The menu is yet to be confirmed.

What if I have special food requirements?

Attendees’ food requirements are always taken into careful consideration when choosing the menu. There will be vegetarian cocktail options. If you are a vegetarian and are attending the VIP event, please This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it so we know how many vegetarian meals to prepare. If you have other specific dietary requirements which we may not have catered for, please This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

What kind of music is there?

The music at Amaranth in the past has included East-Asian pop and rock, various anime and game themes, as well as a variety of popular western music. The play list for Amaranth 2011 has not been finalized, but you can expect a similar variety of music. You may also make suggestions for music by sending us an This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or posting in the Amaranth section of the Manifest forums.

What competitions are there?

In the past Amaranth has held a number of competitions including the King and Queen Competition, Dance Competitions, and "Amaranth Idol," which is similar to a raffle. This year we will be having the King and Queen competition as well as "Amaranth Idol". Other competitions may or may not run and have yet to be confirmed.

What are the Prizes?

Prizes for Amaranth 2011 have yet to be confirmed. However in the past we have had a large variety of prizes including packaged Japanese foods, various restaurant and store vouchers, customised jewellery, comics, animations, games, and related figurines and other merchandise.

Will there be Alcohol?

There will be alcohol at Amaranth 2011 to help guests enjoy the event. All attendees will receive a complimentary tap beer, house wine or sparkling, or a soft drink. Alcohol will only served to over-age guests upon the presentation of ID before 9.30pm. All minors will be required to vacate the premises by 9.30pm due to liquor licensing regulations. Attendees may purchase more alcohol at the bar at their own expense. Amaranth is currently working with the venue to see if we can have special cocktails or shots made up on the night especially for Amaranth attendees. No alcohol may be bought into the venue from outside. Attendees must still abide by the code of conduct and any behavior deemed inappropriate by stuff will be evicted from the venue.

Why must attendees be aged 15 and over at the time of Amaranth?

We would like to ensure that Amaranth is both as safe and as fun as possible for all attendees. If Amaranth were to open attendance to those under the age of 15, they would be required to be supervised by a legal guardian at all times, creating problems in the monitoring of such a system due to limited staff.

Will there be merchandise at Amaranth?

Amaranth has sold posters and badges in the past, and we have also held silent auctions. The exact details of what will be available are yet to be confirmed, however attendees should expect to be able to purchase a variety of things during the evening.

Does Amaranth have a “Lost and Found”?

If any attendee finds any item during the event please hand it over to Amaranth staff. If you've lost an item please contact Amaranth staff. If there is a spare moment we will try to make an announcement to see if any of the guests have seen your item; otherwise we will ensure to keep a look-out for the item throughout the night. If, after the event you still have not found your missing item, or discovered that you have misplaced an item, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with a description of the item. We will get back to you as soon as possible in regards to whether or not we found your missing item at the venue, after all attendees had left.

Does Amaranth have a cloak room?

Amaranth advises that attendees to do not bring unnecessary items to the event, especially those of value. The venue has limited space for storage and it is possible that a cloak room service will be unavailable. At this moment in time the service has not been confirmed, but please check back for further details.

What can or should I wear at Amaranth?

At Amaranth you may wear semi to semi-formal attire or semi to semi-formal cosplay. Alternate fashions such as lolita and steampunk are also acceptable but also need to adhere to the dress code. Please keep safety issues in mind, and please consider the comfort of both you and those around you when selecting what you will wear. For further information, see the dress code.
